Barcode (GTIN) Registration for Health Functional Food Supplements in Korea
After completing supplement OEM production, missing a barcode (GTIN) registration can block entry to major distribution channels and even e-commerce product listings. The process is simpler than it looks, but the timing matters.
Why GTIN Registration Is a Distribution Prerequisite
In South Korea, distributing a health functional food through major retail channels requires a barcode number officially registered through GS1 Korea (the Korean member organization of GS1 International). Without it, product listing is not possible on most major platforms, and fulfillment center logistics systems cannot process the product.
This guide covers the full GTIN registration process from business registration through print-ready barcode verification.
Key Terms: GTIN, EAN-13, and GS1 Company Prefix
- GTIN (Global Trade Item Number): The GS1 international standard for unique product identification. EAN-13 is the most common GTIN format for retail products.
- EAN-13: A 13-digit barcode format visible on most consumer product packaging. The standard format for supplement packaging in South Korea.
- GS1 Company Prefix: A unique numeric prefix assigned to a company upon GS1 Korea membership. Individual product codes are generated from this prefix.
- GS1 Korea: The Korean affiliate of GS1 International, and the official issuing body for barcode numbers in South Korea.
Important: Barcode images generated by free online tools are not GS1-registered numbers. Major distribution channels exclusively recognize officially registered GTINs.
Six Steps to Register a Supplement Product Barcode
Step 1 — Confirm Business Registration
GS1 Korea membership requires a valid business registration certificate. For supplement distribution, at minimum a business registration must exist before applying. Business registration in South Korea is managed through the National Tax Service (Hometax).
Step 2 — Apply for GS1 Korea Membership
Apply at the GS1 Korea website (https://www.gs1kr.org/). Required: business registration certificate copy, completed application form, and annual membership fee payment. Fee amounts vary by membership tier and product volume — confirm current rates on the GS1 Korea website.
Step 3 — Receive GS1 Company Prefix
Upon approval, a GS1 Company Prefix is issued. This prefix is the foundation for generating individual product codes.
Step 4 — Generate Individual GTINs by Product
For each distinct product SKU, assign a unique product serial number and calculate the check digit (automated in most GS1 tools). A separate GTIN is required for:
- Different content amounts (30-count vs. 60-count packs)
- Different flavors or variants
- Pre- and post-reformulation products
- Bundle packages
Step 5 — Generate Barcode Image and Verify Print Specifications
Generate the barcode image using GS1 Korea resources or certified tools. Key print specifications:
- Minimum size: EAN-13 standard width 37.29mm x height 25.93mm at 100% magnification
- Color contrast: Black bars on white background as standard; ensure adequate contrast if placing on colored packaging
- Quiet zone: Mandatory clear space to the left and right of the barcode
Step 6 — Scan Verification on Proof Before Full Print
At the mockup or hard proof stage, scan the barcode with an actual barcode reader and confirm the number reads correctly. Post-print scan failure requires a full reprint.
SKU Curation Strategy for Supplement Product Lines
Planning GTIN assignments ahead of product line expansion prevents inventory management problems later:
- A reformulated product with changed functional ingredients requires a new GTIN
- Each packaging size variant (30-day, 60-day supply) needs its own GTIN
- Bundle packages need separate GTINs from individual units
- Flavor or variant differences also require separate codes
Regulatory Coordination: Barcode and MFDS Authorization
GTIN registration and MFDS health functional food authorization are separate processes. Both are required for legal supplement sales in South Korea. Some MFDS authorization documentation may require barcode information, so coordinating the timing of both processes early avoids late-stage bottlenecks. Verify registered product information against the MFDS food safety database (foodsafetykorea.go.kr) to ensure consistency with package labeling.
Marketing and Distribution Value of GTIN Registration
- Major channel access: Coupang, GS The Fresh, Homeplus, and Olive Young all require official GS1 GTINs for product listing
- Fulfillment center integration: Coupang Rocket Delivery and Naver guaranteed delivery programs require barcode-based logistics integration
- International scalability: GTIN is the global standard, useful for future Amazon or overseas retailer listings without reregistration
- Consumer trust signal: Products scanning against the GS1 global database establish basic product authenticity for informed consumers

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a barcode generated by a free online tool for my supplement packaging?
No.Barcodes generated by free online tools are not GS1-registered numbers.Major Korean distribution channels including Coupang, large retail chains, and health retailers require officially registered GTINs from GS1 Korea.Unofficial numbers will not be accepted for product listing.
Do I need separate barcodes for the same product in different pack sizes?
Yes.GS1 standards require a unique GTIN for each distinct packaging configuration, including different quantities (30-count vs.60-count) of the same product.Using the same GTIN for different pack sizes creates inventory management and logistics system errors.
How early before packaging production should I apply for GS1 Korea membership?
Apply at minimum two to three weeks before you need the barcode on your print-ready artwork.GS1 Korea processes applications within a few business days after receiving complete documentation, but building in additional lead time accounts for any document preparation or clarification needed.
