How to Source Supplement Ingredients: Import, Domestic and Specifications

Sourcing ingredients for a supplement OEM project is more than price shopping.Regulatory approval status, COA quality, supply reliability, and lead time are all factors that will determine whether your product makes it to market on schedule and passes quality inspection.

How to Source Supplement Ingredients: Import, Domestic and Specifications

Why Ingredient Sourcing Is the Foundation of Supplement OEM

Before you can engage a contract manufacturer, you need to know what ingredients you are using, where to get them, and whether they meet regulatory requirements. Most new supplement OEM entrepreneurs underestimate how much time and decision-making this involves. This guide walks through the process I developed after multiple rounds of trial and error.

Step One: Confirm Regulatory Approval Before Sourcing

In Korea, to display functional claims on a health functional food product, every functional ingredient must be listed as an approved functional ingredient (고시형) in the MFDS registry. Check this before spending any time on sourcing:

  1. Visit Food Safety Korea (foodsafetykorea.go.kr)
  2. Navigate to the Health Functional Food section
  3. Search for your target ingredient
  4. Confirm: approved or not, permitted functional claims, daily intake range, and allowable dosage forms

If your ingredient is not on the approved list, it requires an individual recognition application (개별인정형), which involves clinical and safety data submission—a much longer and costlier process. For first-time OEM projects, stick to approved ingredients.

Imported vs. Domestic Ingredients

Both imported and domestically produced ingredients are permitted. The right choice depends on the ingredient and your product strategy:

Imported ingredients:

  • Vitamins, minerals, and specialized extracts are often produced by global manufacturers in the US, Europe, or Japan
  • Premium origin can support marketing positioning in some categories
  • Lead times are longer (weeks to months from order to delivery); MOQ flexibility may be lower
  • Import declaration and inspection under MFDS rules apply

Domestic ingredients:

  • Faster sample turnaround and communication
  • Some functional ingredients (fermented probiotics, specific plant extracts) have strong domestic specialists
  • Agricultural raw materials may have seasonal price variation

A practical approach: use a verified global supplier for 1–2 core functional ingredients, and source complementary ingredients domestically for flexibility.

How to Read a COA

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the supplier's quality documentation for each ingredient batch. Reviewing it carefully is non-negotiable.

Key items to verify:

  • Identity: Ingredient name, botanical name (for plant extracts), strain number (for probiotics)
  • Assay/Potency: Active ingredient concentration within spec range
  • Heavy metals: Lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic below regulatory limits
  • Microbial counts: Total plate count, coliforms, Salmonella within limits
  • Pesticide residues: Relevant for plant-derived ingredients
  • Expiration date: Raw material must be within shelf life through your planned production and finished product shelf life
  • Issuing body: Third-party accredited laboratory vs. manufacturer's internal lab (third-party is more credible)

For critical ingredients, request third-party laboratory COAs, not just supplier-internal documents.

Supplier Evaluation Framework

Evaluate potential ingredient suppliers on more than price:

  • Can they supply MFDS-approved functional ingredients with supporting documentation?
  • What is their historical supply reliability and lead time consistency?
  • Do they offer small samples for formulation testing before committing to a full order?
  • What is their minimum order quantity—is it manageable for your initial production run?
  • Do they provide third-party COAs?
  • How quickly and competently do they respond to technical questions?

Building a long-term relationship with 2–3 reliable suppliers is more valuable than chasing the lowest spot price on a single order.

Sourcing Channels in Practice

  • Contract manufacturer recommendation: If you already have a contract manufacturer, their existing supplier relationships are a practical starting point.
  • Industry trade shows: Health functional food exhibitions provide direct access to ingredient suppliers.
  • Domestic ingredient distributors: Single-source access to multiple ingredients.
  • Global platforms: Can be used for discovery, but require independent COA verification and import compliance checks.

Marketing and Business Perspective

Ingredient sourcing decisions directly shape your product story:

  • Origin transparency: Clearly disclosing ingredient origin and quality certifications builds consumer trust, especially in the premium segment.
  • Cost structure planning: Ingredient cost is the foundation of your unit economics. Understand how cost changes as volume scales—this determines your pricing strategy and margin targets.
  • Inventory risk management: Over-ordering ingredients that expire before they can be used creates write-off losses. Tie ingredient orders to realistic sales forecasts.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find ingredient suppliers for supplement OEM?

The easiest starting point for first-time OEM projects is to ask your contract manufacturer for supplier recommendations—they typically have existing supplier relationships and can advise on which ingredients they have worked with.Industry trade shows and domestic ingredient distributors are also reliable channels.

Is a COA alone sufficient to verify ingredient quality?

A COA is a necessary starting point, but not always sufficient.Supplier-internal COAs without third-party verification carry more uncertainty. For critical ingredients, request a COA issued by an accredited third-party laboratory. If you have doubts, you can commission independent re-testing through a domestic testing facility.

Should I choose imported or domestic ingredients for my supplement OEM?

Neither is universally superior. The decision should be based on the specific ingredient's characteristics, supply reliability, regulatory approval status, lead time requirements, and your product positioning.A common approach is to use verified global suppliers for core functional ingredients and domestic sources for flexibility on secondary ingredients.
